The EV-Accelerating Rate Calorimeter
- an Accelerating Rate Calorimeter with a different sized calorimeter.

This major development was carried out to aid those interested in studying heat effects and effect of heat on batteries larger than those permitted in the standard accelerating rate calorimeter.

The first application is to use the calorimeter isothermally over a temperature range that reflects operational conditions. The EV batteries are then subjected to charge and discharge cycles at various normal and abusive regimes. The heat released upon charging and discharging is determined - the variation of heat release with repeated cycling is determined. The ability of the EV-Accelerating Rate Calorimeter to detect heat changes from as little as 0.01°C/min makes the system ideal for such testing.

As a standalone instrument the EV-Accelerating Rate Calorimeter allows simple and clear simultaneous presentation of electrical and thermal data.  The instrument potentially has many other uses. However the current application is battery safety and efficiency.

Price of an EV-Accelerating Rate Calorimeter is more than a standard Accelerating Rate Calorimeter system - but a double system is available at a price little more than the EV-Accelerating Rate Calorimeter system. This contains the EV and standard calorimeters but comes with one set of electronics and with both calorimeters being used within the EV-Accelerating Rate Calorimeter containment vessel.

THT also manufactures integrated systems for abuse testing as well as charging, overcharging and cycling.
